Atherstone Town Council

The brief of the site is that it should extend the existing provisions for burials and provide an area of semi- natural setting for burials and the dedication of of ashes and allow safe and easy access through the site. The site should be peaceful and suitable for quiet contemplation for their friends and family.  Its should allow for the burying or scattering of ashes in a woodland setting and be keeping with the local landscape and contribute to the green infrastructure while also providing a gain in biodiversity potential.

The site is accessed from Sheepy Road through the existing cemetery gates with a new connecting dive taken through the boundary fence to car parking and further roads into the eastern half of the burial ground. The site is divided into areas to rpovide the differing aspects of the brief: 1. Areas closest to the existing cemetery are dedicated for 'traditional burial and laid out with formal lawned burial areas with the occasional retained trees mirroring the parkland landscape of the cemetery. Vehiclar access and parking areas allow for ease of access to these areas for people with reduced mobility. 2. A new native hedge semi-permeable boundary divides the traditional graves from the natural burial grounds which is split into woodland burial area where existing trees are most dences; meadow burial areas and ashes scattering area nearest the brook. 3. New and existing trees and scrub provide screening from the A5 along the south boundary and the industrial premises on the west boundary. 4. A woodland walk is created within the natural burial ground and further pathes created around the natural burial ground. These are less formal with meandering path and softer resin bonded and hoggin materials.
