Housing Developments and Making Shade Look Beautiful

Housing developments have by nature shady areas due to a combination of aspect and built environment. Djogs take this challenge as an opportunity to include lots of woodland trees, shrubs and plants including a significant amount of native plants. Most of the British Isles was once covered in forest so it is not hard to find shade tolerant native species adapted to the local environment. The trick is to choose and arrange (in combination with non-natives) to ensure a high quality amenity for residents and a low cost/maintenance landscape for the Client.

We provide a bespoke design for every project based on location, soil, aspect and development style. We do, however, follow simple rules to include natural woodland strata of canopy, understorey and field layer using native trees such as birch, cherry and rowan, native and non-native evergreen shrubs and herbaceous and evergreen ground flora including native ferns and bulbs. The combination of these often including a dwarf shrub hedge provide a beautiful formal finish.

In keeping with our ethos we make every scheme a gain for biodiversity so we include high wildlife value species providing habitat, nectar, pollen, leaf and fruit for local wildlife. We also include native species such as english bluebell, silver birch, rowan, wild garlic, sweet woodruff, greater stitchwort, primrose and wild daffodil. We are passionate supporters of the Birmingham and Black Country Nature Improvement Area and follow its guidance both within and outside its area. The urban environment is of increasing importance for wildlife and ensuring new sites are wildlife friendly and connected with the landscape has a significant effect on local biodiversity.
