Brief
To provide high quality green infrastructure creating an
attractive environment for residents, and visitors. the amenity
space will provide a safe, sustainable ecologically rich
landscape sympathetic to the historic setting and the locality.
Concept
The landscape is predominantly designed to offer residents an
attractive setting with opportunity for informal relaxation with
the grounds. pedestrian access is provided directly from the
public highway in addition to the footpaths through it. Vehicular
access is to parking at rear of the building.
Formal planting within the courtyard and general vicinity of the
former workhouse building is used to provide structure to the
grounds in keeping and sympathetic to the setting. the use of
drift planting and informal elements within the planting scheme
soften these areas providing and creating movement, sensory
experience and ecological interest.
Plant species are chosen to offer seasonal changes with colour
through flowers, leaves and fruit throughout the year. wildlife
will benefit from the use of a mix of locally native and high
wildlife value non-native tree, shrub and plant species
periphery of the south west of the site and the bank running
through the site are planted with woodland to match the
locally present type with existing vegetation retained
where ever possible. The existing boundary hedgerows including
the canopy trees are retained and restored using infilling from
the woodland shrub palette. this will create permeability within
the site for a range of wildlife including bats, birds and
invertebrates
Specimen planting of copper beech replace removed trees and
provide additional continuity in the planting
