Designing Last Resting Places
The landscape of last resting places is always important but can vary greatly. This is a brief outline of how we designed three very different site:
Site One: Green Burial Ground in rural Solihull
A brand new development in a field next to and near a number of sensitive ecological sites. Using the Natural Burial movement ethos of low impact and working with the Client, Butterfly Conservation and a number of other environmental consultancies djogs produced a strategy for the site that provided both safe access and use for people and a mosaic of habitats for wildlife including locally recorded protected species. The burial ground will grow organically overtime with meadow created using locally sourced green hay and woodland areas based on the Arden NVC woodland type allowing a variety of burial places including under a planted tree.
Site Two: Children's Ashes Scattering Area, Atherstone Cemetery
The client had chosen a secluded area under a mature conifer and screened by a line of Rhododendrons. The site challenges were shade and drought due to canopy cover and competition. The client required an area of lawn, seating and pathways. Djogs made opportunity from the challenges and created a fairytale woodland garden with Bluebells, cowslips, ferns, foxgloves and other woodland plants. The garden is deliberately cheerful with a long flowering season from February through to November. A shade tolerant lawn will look good all year and sweet woodruff planted by a bench supplies a fragrance of freshly mown hay
Site Three: Adults Ashes Scattering Area, Atherstone Cemetery
The Client had chosen an area in the rear corner of the site which provided a path, tall conifer hedges along the site boundary and a cluttered corner. Djogs provided additional paths, dwarf hedging ornamental trees and shrubs and a seating area. Evergreen shrubs of contrasting and complimenting foliage colours provide setting and use of native and high value nectar source species provide additional wildlife value
