DJOGS supported Fairlawns Hotel and Spa in Aldridge with a coordinated planning package for a phased programme of improvements to a well-established leisure destination. The project required a clear, planning-led approach that considered landscape, trees and ecology together, alongside the operational needs of a live site.
Our role
We provided joined-up landscape and environmental support to help the project team present a clear, robust submission to the local planning authority. Our aim was to reduce risk, avoid late-stage redesign, and ensure the proposal addressed key planning considerations from the outset.
What we delivered
Our input included:
Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, prepared in line with recognised guidance, including scoping, baseline study, assessment and mitigation recommendations
Arboricultural Impact Assessment, including tree condition information, tree constraints, tree retention strategy and a tree protection plan with practical site recommendations
Biodiversity assessment, informed by habitat mapping and the proposed landscape scheme, with recommendations to support net gain where required
Habitat baseline assessment, to support the ecology evidence base and inform the landscape proposals
Habitats Regulations Assessment screening, where relevant to support the planning process
Landscape proposals and supporting drawings, to communicate a clear and deliverable approach to planting, external works and site integration
Key considerations
This type of project typically requires careful coordination because it is:
An operational site, where works often need to be deliverable in phases
Landscape-led, requiring mitigation and enhancement to be designed in from the start
Tree- and ecology-aware, so constraints are understood early and addressed proportionately
Planning-focused, with clear, well-presented information to support efficient decision-making and avoid additional information requests
Outcome
Planning consent was secured for the proposals, supporting a programme of site enhancements and improvements. DJOGS’ coordinated approach helped provide clarity for the planning process and confidence that landscape, arboriculture and ecology requirements had been addressed in a practical, deliverable way.
