Woodland Planting and Management Plan, Wootton Wawen, Henley-in-Arden
Case Study: Woodland Planting and Management Plan, Wootton Wawen, Henley-in-Arden
Project type: Forestry building (Permitted Development) supported by woodland management strategy
Location: Land north of Wawensmere Road, Wootton Wawen, Henley-in-Arden
Designations: Green Belt and designated woodland within the Arden Special Landscape Area
Outcome: Recently approved
Project overview
DJOGS supported a forestry building proposal with a clear, evidence-led woodland management and planting strategy. The aim was to demonstrate the practical need for a small forestry workshop and to provide a robust, long-term plan for managing and improving a structurally diverse woodland.
This type of project requires careful planning and strong supporting documentation, particularly within Green Belt and sensitive landscape designations. The submission needed to show that the proposals were proportionate, low-impact and directly linked to woodland operations and long-term management.
Our role
DJOGS prepared an integrated package of supporting information and drawings to demonstrate:
the reasonable necessity of a forestry workshop to support woodland operations
how the proposals protect existing woodland features and sensitive areas
how woodland planting, rides and glades will be managed and enhanced over the long term
how biodiversity and habitat value will be strengthened through targeted management and habitat features
What we delivered
A Forestry Statement setting out the purpose and operational need for the workshop
A Woodland Management Strategy with clear objectives, prescriptions and monitoring actions
A detailed Woodland Planting and Management Plan showing woodland structure, planting types, rides and glades, and habitat enhancement measures
Clear recommendations for low-impact access and working methods to avoid harm to existing trees and sensitive areas
Species and seed mix schedules to support woodland edge, understorey, rides, glades and wildflower areas
Key measures and strategy (high level)
The strategy focused on practical woodland management and habitat improvement, including:
A seven-year rotational coppice management approach to create a structurally diverse woodland and support woodland birds and ground flora
Woodland rides and glades managed to create flower-rich edges and nectar resources, supporting a wider range of wildlife
Woodland edge reinforcement and understorey planting to strengthen structure and improve resilience
Targeted habitat features, such as bird and bat boxes and small mammal habitat features, to increase biodiversity value
A low-impact approach to access and operations, with measures designed to protect existing trees and sensitive areas
Outcome
The proposals have been approved, supported by a clear strategy demonstrating that woodland management, ecology and access were carefully considered and that the forestry building is proportionate and necessary to support long-term woodland objectives.
How DJOGS can help
